The Need & Opportunity
Why Ireland?
In 440 A.D., Patrick brought the gospel to Ireland which led to the conversion of thousands to Christianity. The fruit of his preaching remained for generations through established churches, trained ministers, and foreign missionaries sent to dark places of Europe. Some would say that it was in fact Irish Christianity that saved Western civilization from the brink of destruction (How the Irish Saved Civilization, Thomas Cahill).
In recent years, Ireland has largely separated itself from Christianity. Churches lay empty or serve as museums, sepulchres of a bygone era. But God is working to move his Kingdom forward, and facilitative church planting is making a vital difference to the work of church planters in Ireland. We will join in this crucial work of pushing against the spiritual darkness in Ireland.

Global Significance of Ireland
Mass Immigration — Because of Ireland’s terrible history of English rule, terrible famines, and frequent rebellions and uprisings; Ireland has seen regular mass immigrations throughout the world (United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and more). This means that there are tens of millions of Irish relatives all over the world (many with ties to Irish families on the Island). So while Ireland is only about 7 million people, there are estimated 50 to 80 million Irish decendents around the world.
International Immigration into Ireland — Because the Irish people have great sympathy for immigrants, the Republic of Ireland sees upwards to 150,000 immigarants and assylum seekers each year from all over the world. This makes Ireland one of the most internationally diverse countries of Europe (per capita).
Global Ecconomic Ties — During the 1980s and 90s, Ireland became the European and global hub for over 700 US companies (e.g., Intel, Boston Scientific, Dell, Pfizer, Google, Hewlett Packard, Facebook, and Johnson and Johnson) which not only connects Ireland to the United States but also to the rest of Europe in imporant ways.
This means that Ireland has a unique influence and connection throughout the world. So, if we could reach Ireland with the gospel, the world wide implications could be massive!
